In a world obsessed with productivity, choosing to rest can feel like rebellion. But for those healing from trauma, burnout, or years of chronic stress, rest isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. This week, we’re diving deep into why your nervous system needs rest to truly heal, how to honor your body’s signals, and what to do when rest feels uncomfortable.
The Problem with “Pushing Through”
Most of us were raised to believe that rest comes after the work is done. That we have to earn it. And if we stop too soon? Lazy. Weak. Self-indulgent.
But what happens when the work never ends? When your nervous system has been stuck in fight-or-flight for years, rest isn’t optional – it’s urgent. Your body isn’t designed to live in survival mode. If you don’t learn to regulate and recharge, you burn out.
Why Rest Can Feel So Uncomfortable
Rest isn’t always soft and cozy. Sometimes it brings up all the things you’ve been running from: guilt, anxiety, racing thoughts. That’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign your nervous system doesn’t know safety yet.
For many, this starts in childhood. If you grew up in an unpredictable or emotionally unsafe environment, your nervous system learned to stay on high alert. This hypervigilance becomes second nature, and resting starts to feel unsafe – because stillness meant vulnerability.
Add people-pleasing to the mix – another survival strategy often rooted in childhood trauma – and the need to constantly “perform” or meet others’ expectations becomes deeply ingrained. In that state, rest feels like failure. Like you’re letting someone down.
To truly rest, your body needs to believe it’s safe. That’s where nervous system regulation comes in. It’s not just about relaxation – it’s about rewriting your internal sense of safety.
Start With Gentle Regulation
Here are three ways to start supporting your system today:
- Micro-Moments of Pause — Even 60 seconds of stillness can begin to shift your state. Take a breath. Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders.
- Reclaim Joy — Do something that lights you up, just because it feels good. Passion isn’t a luxury—it’s medicine.
- Challenge the Guilt — Ask yourself: Who told me I had to earn rest? What if I don’t need to?
